Transmission range control and information efficiency for FH packet radio networks

In this paper, we evaluate the optimal transmission range and code rate that maximize the information efficiency of a frequency-hopped (FH) packet radio network. Each terminal in the network transmits packets using a (n,k) Reed-Solomon code, and we assume a symbol error occurs if and only if the interfering signal power exceeds a prescribed signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) threshold. The number of terminals in the network is modeled as a Poisson point process and the terminals are uniformly distributed on the ground. Rayleigh fading and log-normal shadowing channel are considered and the networks employ an unslotted ALOHA channel access protocol.
