W. Mitlehner, E. Cronin, Joseph D. Bronzino, René Guibert Veranes · 2005

CYTOPATH is a prototype expert system forthe diagnosis of squamous lesions in the PAP smears of pre-menopausal women. The system was developed to run on a personal computer, side by side with a cytotechnologist at a microscope. CYTOPATH arrives at adiagnosis by prompting the user for the diagnostic features of the slide. A conclusion is reached when the user’sresponses match thecriteriaforadiagnosis. Incasecriteriaforseveraldiagnosesismet,CYTOPATH will rank the results, based upon the potential for each diagnostic feature to appear for each result. If a diagnosis cannot be reached, CYTOPATH will useasubsetofthediagnosticfeatures to reach aconclusion. An underlying level of questioning has also been included in the system, geared toward those unfamiliarwith cytologic terminology. When aquestion is left unanswered, CYTOPATH will attempt to break the primary question into non-technical sub-parts, in an attempt to reach a conclusion concerning the primary question.
