Improving the Capstone project experience

John G. Flowers · 2008

During the fall 2007 academic semester, nine students, including myself, were enrolled in the Capstone Software Engineering Project course (CSCE 492) under the instruction of Dr. John B. Bowles at the University of South Carolina. This paper describes the software engineering process as experienced by one team of students enrolled in the course, examines the strengths and weaknesses of the course's implementation of the process through the use of team member surveys, and finally suggests ways in which the course may be improved. Potential benefits of proposed changes include providing a more complete software engineering experience to students and the strengthening of local industry, the university, and its home city of Columbia, South Carolina.
