Editorial: Richard Henchman to join the Editorial Board. Introducing Graphical Abstracts. Forthcoming Special Issues

Marc Van Regenmortel · Journal of Molecular Recognition · 2012

At the end of 2012, Professor Olivier Michielin from EPFL Lausanne will leave the Editorial Board. I would like to thank him for his editorial work, especially for editing, together with Rebecca Wade, the special issue dedicated to Professor Martin Karplus on “Dynamical Aspects of Molecular Recognition,” in which he also contributed a timely review (Karplus, 2010; Zoete et al., 2010). The Journal of Molecular Recognition [JMR] is receiving an increasing number of computational and theoretical contributions. It was therefore necessary to replace Olivier by an expert in this field. I have the pleasure to announce that Professor Richard Henchman from the University of Manchester will join the Editorial Board. Together with Professor Rebecca Wade, they will deal with all theoretical and computational aspects of molecular recognition phenomena in the Life Sciences. I am also pleased to announce that starting from the first issue of 2013, the Journal of Molecular Recognition will incorporate graphical abstracts as a part of the contents listings of articles in the Journal. These graphical abstracts will normally take the form of either three-dimensional reproductions of molecules of interest from the paper or reduced-size reproductions of suitable graphs or figures from the paper. For articles that are not of a structural nature, we would ask authors to supply a three-dimensional “ChemDraw” type illustration of a molecule or feature of interest. To take advantage of this enhanced facility, authors are asked to send a molecular or equivalent diagram marked “Graphical Abstract” as a supplement to the paper or to indicate a suitable figure from the paper which may be used as a graphical abstract. As a guide to authors, we will change the Author Guidelines, giving the following details: JMR's table of contents will be presented in graphical form with a brief abstract. The table of contents entry must include the article title, the authors' names, no more than 80 words or three sentences of text summarising the key findings presented in the paper and a figure that best represents the scope of the paper (see the section on abstract writing for more guidance). Table of contents entries should be submitted to Manuscript Central in one of the generic file formats and uploaded as “Graphical Abstract” during the initial manuscript submission process. The image supplied should fit within the dimensions of 50 mm × 60 mm, and be fully legible at this size. Examples for arranging the text and figures as well as paper title and authors' names are shown in the succeeding text. Production of these graphical abstracts will begin immediately, and so authors should send the required details with any forthcoming papers they submit. We hope that this feature will enhance the appearance and usefulness of the Journal in the coming years. I would also like to announce two new special issues. Gidi Fleminger and George Ehrlich have assembled the best papers presented at the Bioaffinity Conference held in Lisbon in 2011. The articles have been edited and proofed and will be published in the near future. In May 2013, the next AFMBioMed Conference will take place in Shanghai, China. Jean-Luc Pellequer and Pierre Parot will select the best papers presented at this conference that will be published in JMR. This follows on earlier special issues devoted to previous AFMBiomed conferences (Parot et al., 2007; Kumar et al., 2009; Casuso et al., 2011; Scheuring et al., 2012).
