On The Detection Of Internal Waves In High Resolution Sar Imagery Using The Hough Transform

G.G. Hogan, Jim Marsden, John C. Henry · 1991

Internal waves generated by a ship moving in a straight line form multiple “V” patterns behind the ship. This study investigated the feasibility of using the Hough transform to detect internal waves. The arms of the “V,” which are the internal wave phase fronts, were approximately straight. The Hough transform is well suited for extracting straight-line features even at low signal-to-noise levels. The Hough transform augmented with specialized image processing techniques, was applied to high resolution synthetic aperture radar imagery containing internal waves. Results of this preliminary study were encouraging: although the internal waves were only 2 dB above background level, they were successfully detected, with no false alarms.
