Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol is a typical proactive protocol for MANET. This paper proposes a novel improved routing protocol based on OLSR, and we call this scheme as the Hierarchical OLSR (HOLSR) protocol, which can be used in large and heavy traffic wireless environment, such as intelligent battlefield, tactical internet, etc. HOLSR uses a hierarchical structure to reduce routing update overhead in large networks. Nodes exchange topology control (TC) messages with their neighbors with a frequency which depends on the scope level. What's more, in order to improve the efficiency of local routing table, a "error routing compensation" updating technique is also adopted. Simulation experiments show that HOLSR is efficient and scalable routing solution in a mobile ad hoc environment, compared to OLSR, in the same conditions, success rate is enhanced, the end-to-end delay and routing overhead of the whole networks is both reduced evidently. Compared to other MANET protocol, such as DSR, AODV and DSDV, HOLSR protocol can also get better integrated performances in different network traffic and mobility.
