Abstract Compared to traditional CRT TV, LC TV has the shortcoming of motion blur. There are two causes for LCD motion blur: (1) LCD slow temporal response and (2) LCD backlight is always‐on (Hold effect). Motion blur can be characterized with the motion picture response time metric (MPRT). MPRT of a display can be measured spatially using a commercial MPRT instrument, but it is very expensive and difficult to use. In our previous papers, we modeled LCD motion blur through it temporal point spread function (temporal PSF) of an LCD device so that the LCD temporal PSF can uniquely determine the motion blur. The MPRT can thus be measured from the temporal measurement, which is much easier than the spatial tracking camera approach. In this paper, we compared the measured motion blur using both the spatial tracking camera approach and the temporal response approach at various backlight flashing widths. The temporal method can potentially replace expensive MPRT instrument.
