Prediction of GSM performance using measured propagation data

This paper presents a technique which allows the prediction of the GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) radio link bit error rate performance using only simple propagation parameters. It is shown by simulation how these parameters can be obtained through the use of a modified GSM mobile acting as a channel sounder. Specifically, the scheme uses a function of the instantaneous signal strength and multipath delay to estimate the number of errors occurring in a given GSM burst. The test results presented demonstrate the potential for a robust technique to reliably predict the radio link bit error rate, enabling operators to make rapid, low cost channel measurements and coverage predictions. The performance of the technique has been assessed using a GSM radio link simulation tool in conjunction with standard channel models as well as real, recorded channel data. In all cases encouraging results have been produced.
