Narendra R Dhoriya, Devang U. Shah · International Journal of Scientific Research · 2012

In the recent era, the Face recognition technology has numerous commercial as well as security applica- tions at various places. For this, requirement of the memory element or capacity for storage of images is one of the major problems for generation of database for face recognition system. In this paper image compression techniques using which maximum utilization of memory element or storage devices can be achieved are discussed. Here techniques used for image compres- sion for face recognition are DWT & DCT. This review is initial part of the research for developing the algorithm to improve the results of mostly used DWT & DCT techniques and use one of the best techniques among them. tify coarse details. The basic idea of the wavelet transform is to represent any arbitrary function (t) as a superposition of a set of such wavelets or basic functions. These basic functions or baby wavelets are obtained from a single prototype wavelet called the mother wavelet, by dilation and translation operation (2). Discrete Wavelet Transform of a finite length signal s(n) hav- ing N components, for image is expressed by an N x N matrix. In this research a new and very competent image compression scheme is proposed based on discrete wavelet transform that results less computational complexity with no sacrifice in image quality. The performance of the proposed algorithm has been compared with some other common compression standards. Several quality measurement variables like peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and mean square error (mSE) have been estimated to determine how well an image is reproduced with respect to the reference image. The basic idea for compressing the image using discrete wavelet transform is given in below figure 1(2).
