Real-time transmission of audio and video streams has become a common way of interaction and communication all over the world. With the tremendous uses of the Internet, the need for a secure communication environment is a must. Towards this direction, this paper presents a technique of improving the performance of security of video over IP networks. That proposed technique is based on stream ciphers. We deal with any video as a stream of bits of data when sending or receiving it. Encryption is applied on the bit-stream then transmitted in an encrypted format over the network. Decryption would be done at the destination entity within the acceptable time. The proposed technique guarantees that the real-time stream is delivered in time. Synchronization between the sender and receiver is fulfilled. Security and privacy requirements are preserved as well. Through this paper, a full specification of the proposed technique is provided: experimental results, statistical analysis and sensitivity analysis. Modifications in the Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) are exploited. Video encryption (enciphering) and decryption (deciphering) while transmission/reception are discussed in details. The implementation was done using Java programming.
