Degradation of the Space Station Freedom Ku-band return link due to encryption

Hyuck Moo Kwon, K. Tu · 2002

An analysis is made of the bit error probability of the encrypted channel in the Ku-band single-access return link of the Space Station Freedom (SSF), and it is compared with the bit error probability of the channel without encryption. At 10/sup -5/ bit error probability (BER), encryption degradation for an uncoded channel is 1.4 dB. Adding Reed-Solomon coding would improve the 10/sup -5/ BER to 10/sup -36/, and encryption degradation would be negligible.>
