A suitable introduction for IP novices?

R. Kunze · Journal of Intellectual Property Law & Practice · 2015

‘A book may be good for nothing; or there may be only one thing in it worth knowing; are we to read it all through?’ (Samuel Johnson) This section is dedicated to the review of ideas, articles, books, films and other media. It will include replies (and rejoinders) to articles, the evaluation of new ideas or proposals, and reviews of books and articles both directly and indirectly related to intellectual property law. The reason for reviewing EU IP LAW—A Short Introduction to European Intellectual Property Law by Paul van der Kooij and Dirk Visser was twofold: first, reviewing the book, with its fewer than 150 pages, seemed to be manageable and, secondly and more importantly, it was tempting to see how the authors' aim was realized, ie to provide novices—mainly students—with an initial taste of the fascinating area of IP law. The title of the book seems promising and very ambitious. Moreover, the appearance of the book's cover, which bears the two (unregistered) designs at issue in Karen Millen Fashion v Dunnes Stores & others (C-345/13, EU:C:2014:2013), raised reasonably high expectations.
