Standardized Multivendor Network Management

Kornél Terplán · 2005

Hybrid communication architectures, inconnected LANs, MANS and WANs, implementation of mission critical applications on departmental proc, messors and on LANs brought inadequacies of existing LAN related network management instruments ant9 techniques to attention as certain LAN-based imultivendor enterprise networks became practically unmanageable. The pager focuses on user needs of interconnected LANs with emphasis on management functions, applications, instrumentation, standardization and platforms. It outlines the connections by discussing the management role of bridges, routers aind gateways. It addresses the two principal management functions of configuration and fault management, current instruments such as protocol anal:yzers, software diagnostic tools, element manageiment systems, LAN management integrators and reflectometers. Also discussed are competing standards, such CMIP, CMOT, and SNMP. Practical exam:ples are shown for the eventing technique (CMIP) and polling technique (SNMP) for fault and configuration management.
