Access control in metropolitan area networks
L.-N. Wong, Moshe Schwartz · 1990
It is proposed that access control be implemented to alleviate long-term overloading at the output buffer. Credit managers using the 'leaky bucket' algorithm are employed to filter traffic at each of the input buffers. Dynamic algorithms have been sought to coordinate the operation of these filters on the basis of information fed back periodically by the output buffer. They protected the throughputs of the low load inputs and at the same time allow high-load inputs to use any idle capacities available. The adaptive control algorithm developed provides equity in the sharing of network resources, as well as the utilization of idle network capacities.>
