School Timetabling by Computer a Technical History

Maggie Dempster, David Lethbridge, Alistair Ulph · Educational Research · 1975

Summary The purpose of this report is to give a brief description of the development of computer‐based timetabling systems. We begin with an outline of the nature of the timetabling problem, suggesting the kind of requirements that arise in practice and the criteria used to evaluate timetables. The next three sections outline the various systems that have been developed, the early systems which were largely unsuccessful, the second generation systems which have been successfully implemented, and the latest systems which try new approaches to the problem, not always successfully.
