The Critical Temporal Interval Required for Judgements of Asynchronous Acoustic-Visual Speech Signals
Ronald J. Balthazor · Australian Journal of Human Communication Disorders · 1977
The critical temporal interval (CTI) required for observers to judge delayed auditory speech signals from a video tape was explored. The effects place of articulation had on reducing the CTI was analysed under three experimental conditions. Data indicate that a shortened CTI related to a more highly visible place of articulation. For the three conditions studied, intervals ranged from five to eight times the size of the CTI for comparable heteromodal conditions employing discrete stimuli.
