Heterogeneous Multi Domain Network Architecture for Military Communications

Arjan Durresi, Mimoza Durrësi, Leonard Barolli · 2009

Modern battlefields represent complex network scenarios that include different networking domains, which need to communicate. These domains include different military entities, such as various allies armies, forces of the same army, mobile objects, for example tanks, vehicles, soldiers, flying vehicles, etc., that need to communicate quickly and will minimum of overhead, in order to accomplish their missions. We propose Heterogeneous Multi Domain (HMD) architecture and protocols that support intercommunications among various network domains in the battlefield. HMD protocol uses a network of gateways as an hierarchical virtual infrastructure to interconnect battlefield network domains. Gateways are responsible for translation among different communication protocols, including routing, signalling, and security.HMD is scalable, flexible and adaptive to QoS needs for interdomain battlefield communications.
