Extending models of conflict and intent dynamics in narrative-based virtual worlds
R. Michael Young · 2010
In this paper, we describe ongoing work in the Liquid Narrative group extending computational models of narrative structure. The work looks specifically at two elements of narrative structure that have seen little explicit attention: conflict and intent revision. Our approach employs a planning-based model to represent the plans build and operated upon by characters within a story and an explicit cognitive model of the narrative we expect users to build as a result of viewing or participating in the story. This work has potential impact on the creation of new types of narrative-based interactions within computer games and other virtual worlds.
