Free Answer Stereotypes and Anti-Semitism

Don Cahalan, Frank N. Trager · Public Opinion Quarterly · 1949

When administered to a cross-section in Denver, a free answer question elicited a variety of stereotypes regarding Jews. The incidence of these stereotypes differed among socio-economic, educational, and other groups. An eleven-item test for anti-Semitism administered to the same sample, however, gave scores which in several cases appeared to conflict with the free answer results. It is probable that both measures are useful, but tap different aspects of the same problem. Don Cahalan is Director of the Opinion Research Center, University of Denver. Frank N. Trager is Program Director of the Anti-Defamation League, New York City.
