Cooperative scheduling for multimedia services and computation intensive applications for cluster server
Hon-Hing Wan, Xiaola Lin · 2002
The cluster server is widely used in different types of systems. However, different types of applications require different types of resources from the cluster. Multimedia services heavily depend on the available communication bandwidth between server and clients. On the other hand, some scientific applications rely on CPU computation power. If a cluster server can support both types of application, resource utilization can be enhanced substantially. Unfortunately, when both types of applications compete for the network bandwidth, the QoS of the multimedia services will be decreased since the data have a temporally dependency feature. The authors propose cooperative scheduling between these two types of application in a cluster server system such that when the applications compete for bandwidth for communication, the influence of QoS of multimedia video services can be minimized.
