Performance evaluation of an enhanced priority-programmable bus access mechanism for Ethernets and FastEthernets

The main drawback of the Ethernet is its inability to deliver delay-sensitive data at an assured QoS. The authors have earlier proposed a modification to the 802.3 standard resulting in an enhanced, priority-programmable, IEEE802.3 compatible bus standard which enables delay-sensitive data be pushed into the Ethernet. This paper presents a performance evaluation of the proposed bus access mechanism, and its effect on the performance of the standard interfaces attached to the same bus. Simulation results have shown satisfactory performance: the high-priority bus access capability and its consistency against loading activities by the other nodes attached to the bus.
