Bart van Arem · 2007

Cooperative vehicle infrastructure systems offer a promising perspective to alleviate problems in road traffic with respect to traffic safety, congestion and the environment. This document describes the rationale behind and main results of the SUMMITS programme that was conducted by TNO from 2003-2006 as well as the current and expected developments of road traffic along with developments at both national and European levels. It goes on to outline TNO's vision of the traffic system of the future and the corresponding research challenges that were addressed in the SUMMITS programme. Finally the main results of the SUMMITS programme are presented: the Integrated Full Range Speed Assistant, the Network Manager and the SUMMITS Tool Suite.
