Automatic linguistic resolution: framework and applications

Samuel W. K. Chan · 2002

Like many natural cognitive processes, natural language processing involves a simultaneous consideration of large number of different sources of information. It is unrealistic to assume a single and simple recipe can solve the general problem of ambiguity. In this article, we show how linguistic resolutions can be achieved by using both rules and associations in a neurosymbolic framework and how context effects can be modeled and carried over into the sentence analysis. Three applications attest the validity of our framework. This exploration contributes to our understanding in linguistic resolution as well as simulates the dynamic and complex processes that take place in text comprehension.
