Applications of cognitive radio systems for industrial wireless automation

Andreas Wilzeck, Emil Dimitrov, Andrej Tissen · 2011

The application of wireless technologies in the area of industrial automation and the increasing demand for efficient utilization of the scarce spectrum resources inherently presents the challenge of managing the coexistence of heterogeneous wireless communications. In this contribution we describe applications of Cognitive Radio Systems (CRS) in the area of industrial wireless automation, highlighting their potential benefits to allow for harmonized coexistence of conventional and cognitive wireless technologies. Hence, a CRS is essentially considered the key enabler to establish an integrated and predictable coexistence management for heterogeneous wireless solutions, allowing mixed operation of both CRS and non-CRS. Furthermore, we provide generic system concepts for information acquisition and rating, as well as cognitive coexistence management for wireless automation.
