Packet length optimizations in meteor burst communication systems

R. Lin, Ou Yang, Safwat A. Mahmoud · 2002

The authors analyze the waiting time performance of packets in a meteor burst communication system. The bit error probability during transmissions due to noise in a meteor burst channel is taken into account. Three different protocols using a simple stop-and-wait ARQ (automatic-repeat-request) scheme are analyzed. In order to overcome the drawback found in the optimal-rate-oriented approach, and the performance degradation brought by being unable to operate at optimal rates in conventional meteor-burst communication systems, a novel approach to design optimal packet lengths is suggested. Optimal packet lengths are obtained for the three different protocols. System performance is shown to have improved by optimally packetizing messages.>
