Timing infrastructure for Galileo System

Following a successful launch of EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay System) services in 2005, Europe is now well under its way towards implementation of its own global satellite navigation system called Galileo. Its full operation capability is expected from 2008 onwards. Galileo is a third addition to GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System), however it is the only system under a civilian control as opposed to its military controlled counterparts GPS and GLONASS. Galileo functionality will be heavily relying on its timing infrastructure, which purpose is to provide: • the provision of UTC dissemination service • the generation of a stable time scale (GST) as a requirement to fulfill the navigation needs • the determination and dissemination of Galileo – GPS time offset (GGTO) data in order to improve interoperability of the two systems. This paper is aiming to deliver and overview of the Galileo System timing architecture
