Levels of programmer jobs

My purpose this morning will be to report to you on some of the work that we have done to try to categorize or classify different programmer jobs. This work has, I feel, barely scratched the surface of the problem, but it does represent an approach in the area of job definition which I would like to describe to you for your consideration. Then I would like to try to draw some comparisons between what we have done and what Ray Berger at the University of Southern California has done. Then, finally, I would like to make some guesses about where we are and what still needs to be done.
