Optoelectronic implementation of a multifunction cellular neural network

Keng-Shen Hung, K.M. Curtis, John W. Orton · IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems II Analog and Digital Signal Processing · 1996

A multifunction optoelectronic cellular neural network (OECNN) that combines an electronic CNN and metal-semiconductor-metal photodiodes (MSMPD's), is proposed in this brief. It has advantages in processing speed, circuit simplification (19 MOS transistors for each cell), and multifunction ability. The network architecture and cell design are presented and discussed. Finally, it is applied to three examples of image processing namely edge detection, shadow creation, and noise removal. Using HSPICE to simulate one 7/spl times/9 array and one 16/spl times/16 array we verify the multi functionality of the OECNN even under 10% variations in the MSMPD's characteristics.
