The ECL programming system

ECL is a programming language system currently being implemented as a research project at Harvard University. Its goal is an environment which will significantly facilitate the production of programs. In this paper, we describe the motivation for this project, present the approach taken in its design, and sketch the resulting ECL system. Detailed treatment of specific aspects of the system are found elsewhere.
