Resource allocation issues for long-tailed LRD Internet WAN traffic

Anestis Karasaridis, Dimitrios Hatzinakos · 2003

We investigate the implications of traffic with long-tailed density function and long-range dependence (LRD) on bandwidth allocation and admission control in access nodes with fixed cell size. Analytic formulas for the overflow probability bounds of a constant service rate buffer are used to provide bounds of the service rate for /spl alpha/-stable self-similar sources, for which the general theory of effective bandwidths does not apply. The expressions of the bounds are simple and allow quick computation of admissible regions for multiplexed homogeneous or heterogeneous sources entering the network.
