Improved image reproduction from dc components

The Joint Photographic Expert Group standard provides a block smoothing method, that can be used to improve the visual quality of images reproduced from the dc coefficients alone. The method predicts ac coefficients of a block in terms of the dc values of the surrounding blocks. This note presents a new set of prediction equations. Experiments show that the proposed equations produce noticeable improvements in the visual quality of the reconstructed images.
