A generalized concatenated code construction technique for unidirectional byte error-control
Yuichi Saitoh, Hirotaka Imai · 1992
A byte error is also called a b-bit byte error when a byte consists of b bits. The authors abbreviate 't-fold b-bit-byte error-correcting (or -detecting)' as t-bEC (or t-bED), 't-fold unidirectional b-bit-byte error-correcting (or -detecting)' as t-UbEC (or t-UbED), and 'all-unidirectional-error-detecting' as AUED, t-bEC/d(>or=t)-bED Reed-Solomon (RS) codes, which include shortened and lengthened RS codes, are capable of t-UbEC/d-UbED, but RS codes are not fit for control of the predominant errors in byte-organized computer memories, i.e., unidirectional byte errors. They propose a construction of t-UbEC/d-UbED codes and given a large number of more efficient codes than the t-bEC/d-bED RS codes for b=4 to 8. Efficient encoding schemes remain to be investigated for the inner codes of the proposed construction.>
