Delay Based Load Aware Routing Protocol for Ad Hoc Networks

Yang Li, Hong Man · 2007

Routing protocol design is one of the major challenges for wireless Ad Hoc network research and implementation. Most existing ad hoc routing protocols do not take the traffic load as a factor when making routing decision. The result is that the heavily loaded intermediate nodes can be included in the route during the route request time and will be chosen to relay the packet during the packet forwarding time. Longer transmission delay and higher packet loss may happen due to the overloaded nodes along the route. In this paper, a delay sensitive load aware routing protocol is proposed, in which each edge of the traffic link is labelled with a load value. This load value is calculated based on several delay sensitive network parameters, namely, MAC layer contention information, average length of packet queue and the number of hops. Individual mobile nodes dynamically maintain this load value to make route discovery and forwarding decisions. How to combined these factors to calculate the overall load value is studied and utilized in the load aware routing protocol. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme has better performance on packet loss and end-to-end delay over conventional protocols. I. INTRODUCTION
