Error resilience techniques for MPEG-2 compressed video signal

O.A. Aho · 1994

The paper introduces error indication and detection mechanisms supported by the MPEG-2 video and systems specifications. The error characteristics and the impact of errors on video bitstreams are analysed. The last part of the paper describes various error concealment methods that can be used to reduce visibility of the lost data elements. All methods presented are verified via software simulations. The scope is limited to one-layer (non-hierarchical) systems but most of the methods can be applied to any MPEG-2 encoded bitstream.
