The commercialization of compact disk (CD) in 1982 was a landmark event in the evolution of optical disk. The compact disk has since enjoyed an overwhelming support from consumers who were not contented with LP records. More than 300 million disks and 50 million players were sold in 1992. Not only did the CD revolutionize world-wide audio market, the successful format standardization it brought on stimulated the software industry to switch from LP records to CD.
