ALI: a versatile interface chip for ATM systems

Philippe Oechslin, Vijay Kumar, H.-D. Lin, J. O'Neill, E. Ouellette · 2003

The authors describe an ATM interface (ATMI) chip that can be used in the implementation of user-network interfaces (UNIs) as well as network-node interfaces (NNIs). This chip performs the following functions: ATM header modification, addition or removal of local routing tags, policing, interfacing with a local processor, and inserting cells into and extracting cells from the ATM link, and gathering statistics for each VC/VP. The ATMI allows fully distributed control of ATM switches eliminating the bottleneck caused by a central controller performing call processing functions.>
