A laboratory for the study of automating programming

In this paper we describe a facility which we characterize as a laboratory for the study of automating programming. The considerable body of work which is related to programming automation is surveyed briefly, and, following this, the basic components of the laboratory and approach to be employed in utilizing it are discussed.
