Efficient restoration technique for missing blocks in images

Ziad Al Kachouh, Maurice Bellanger · IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology · 2003

A spatial domain interpolation technique has been proposed recently for the high-quality restoration of missing blocks in images . An efficient implementation is presented here, which leads to a little more than one multiplication per calculated pixel. Moreover, it is shown that the multiplications can be eliminated altogether, if a slight loss in quality can be tolerated. The technique can be applied in postprocessing devices in image communication terminals.
