Abstract The Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) is an international standard for wireless, cellular, and digital telecommunication networks. This article describes the basic features and history of GSM, the functionality of network components and their interworking, the services offered to GSM subscribers, voice and data transmission over the radio interface (frequencies, modulation, channels, multiple access, coding), networking‐related topics (e.g., protocols for mobility management and handover), and security aspects.
