Trends in Mobile Communications and Research Opportunities for Australia

This paper considers some of the key developments in second-generation digital mobile communications and the evolution to the third-generation system Future Public Land Mobile Telecommunication Systems. The broad opportunities for independent research laboratories in Australia are next discussed including the need to form collaborations with complementary institutions. Finally, there are descriptions of two examples of extensive research projects, which are currently being undertaken within the CSIRO Division of Radiophysics in the area of mobile communications.
