A Swift SIFT for Satellite Event Detection

Raymond Swartz, John Coggi, Justin F. McNeill · AIAA/AAS Astrodynamics Specialist Conference · 2010

The Space Incident Flagging Technique (SIFT) is a method used to monitor the satellite ephemerides to detect changes that are out of the ordinary compared to the object’s historical behavior. For over two years SIFT has been incorporated into the Space Situation Monitoring Laboratory (SSML), a web-based system to monitor the near Earth space environment and provide automated notifications of unusual activity. We describe the implementation of SIFT within the SSML, discuss practical issues in that deployment, and detail specific improvements and modifications that provide much more timely detection of anomalous satellite behavior.
