5.4: Sub‐pixel Rendering for a High Resolution OLED Display with Low Resolution Photomasks

Haoheng Lin, Pei‐Li Sun, Chao‐Hua Wen, Sheng‐Po Wang · SID Symposium Digest of Technical Papers · 2015

The aim of this study is to do a psycho‐visual comparison of different kinds of sub‐pixel arrangements for OLED displays using low‐resolution photomasks. The experimental results show that if the resolution of photomasks of OLEDs matches the active matrix, quad RGGB outperforms all others. If the maximum resolution of OLED photomasks can be 2/3 of the active matrix, size‐varied quad RGGB is a good choice. If the resolution of photomasks is only 1/2 to the active matrix, double‐pixel quad RGGB is preferable. Spatial sharpening also can significantly enhance the visual resolution and overall image quality.
