Training of the hearing impaired is often only marginally effective in developing communication skills. Presently a teacher speaks ii word which the student attempts to repeat. The teacher coaxes and motivates until pronunciation is acceptable. The main impediment in learning to speak correctly is the inability to hear. Instructors and students alike are frustrated by poor performance. We have implemented a system that enhances the teaching process through the use of a personal computer. The PC provides visual feedback which not only tells the student if he/she is speaking correctly, but also shows how to improve speech. The repetition required for speech improvement can now be handled by a computer system. A student can study at any convenient time, at any pace, and without constant instructor attention.
