Enhancing the scalability and usability of computational grids via logical user accounts and virtual file systems

This paper elaborates on mechanisms by which users, data, and applications can bedecoupledfrom individual computers and administrative domains. The mechanisms, which consist of logical user accounts and a virtual #le system, introduce a layer of abstraction between the physical computing infrastructure and the virtual computational grid perceived by users. This abstraction converts compute servers into interchangeable parts, allowing a computational grid to assemble computing systems at run time without being limited by the traditional constraints associated with user accounts, #le systems, and administrative domains.
