This paper reports on the optimization of a H.263/MPEG-4 video encoder for Quarter Common Intermediate Format (QCIF) and Common Intermediate Format (CIF) pictures when implemented on the configurable and extensible embedded RISC processor core. Software optimizations were made on the encoder using computationally light routines and the RISC processor core was configured for our specific application and extended with instructions designed specifically for video compression application. The experimental results show that QCIF and CIF size images can be encoded in real-time.
