Experimental study of a cameraman robot in laparoscopic surgery
Richard Hurteau, P. Kermani, G. Breton, Michel Gagner, E. Millien · 2002
This new surgical technique is based on use of a miniature camera and special instruments inserted through the abdominal wall. The video image is transmitted to a monitor, and the members of the surgical team must co-ordinate their movements in order to execute complex surgical procedures. The laparoscopic camera is currently operated by an experienced assistant, but to reduce the cost of surgery it would be advantageous to use a robotic arm to manipulate the camera under direct orders from the surgeon. This article presents briefly the various cameraman robots in existence and undergoing development. The results of an experimental study of a system using a robotic arm and a voice-operated control interface are presented and discussed.
