Abstract In this document we describe the demonstrator testbed which was developed to validate thesolutions developed for routing in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) in the BISON project [3],and report results obtained with it. The purpose of the demonstrator as orginally stated inthe project’s technical annex is to test the effectiveness of the solutions developed for routingMANETs considering a city-like environment containing basic elements of real-world scenariossuch as buildings/obstacles, street-constrained movements, and realistic trafc patterns. Withthe support of the QualNet [25] simulator, we have set up a simulation environment with suchcharacteristics, using the map of Lugano (Switzerland) as a template. We have run extensivesimulation experiments in order to test the performance of AntHocNet [10, 16, 11, 15, 9], thebiologically-inspired routing algorithm we developed in BISON, in this realistic environment. The performance of AntHocNet has been assessed versus that of AODV [24] and OLSR [8].To provide a sound validation of the algorithms, we have considered many different scenariosvarying a wide range of aspects such as the number of nodes, the amount and type of datatrafc, the communication model (e.g., client-server and peer-to-peer), the response to suddendisruptive events (e.g., appearance of hot-spots and clusters of new nodes), etc.. We showthat over the wide range of experiments reported, AntHocNet shows better performance thanAODV and OLSR. Specically , it delivers more data, with less delay and delay jitter. More-over, in the majority of tests, AntHocNet uses less overhead than the competitor algorithms toprovide this better service.1
