A dynamic resource management scheme for fast handoff in wireless ATM networks

A dynamic wireline resource management scheme is proposed to support fast handoff and to effectively utilize wireline links in wireline ATM networks. This dynamic scheme, called a cell based sequential reservation (CBSR) scheme, is to reserve a set of switched virtual connections (SVCs) to neighboring base stations (BSs) as pre-allocated connections (PACs), which are assigned for handoff calls to extend pre-established communication paths. In the proposed scheme using PACs, processing overhead of SVC establishments may be minimized such that handoff can be quickly performed. A numerical example shows that the CBSR scheme without path-loop elimination reduces wireline link resources by approximately 20%, compared with the PVC scheme and, the CBSR with path-loop elimination requires a minimum bandwidth.
