A Hierarchal Approach to Facial Expression Recognition using Active Appearance Models for Service Robots

Abhishek Sharma, Ronny Stricker · 2009

For better interaction between human beings and service robots we need to detect the emotional state of the human user. This can help the robot adapt to the user's needs and can be used to increase the naturalness of the interaction. Our work proposes a hierarchal approach to facial expression recognition based extracting some facial features with the help of an Active Appearance Model. We introduce a concept of dynamic feature parameters and then make use of both local static features and dynamic features for classification.
