A Fast, Low Cost, Integer Multiply Unit for A Minicomputer

A fast hardware multiply unit for use with the Data General Nova range of minicomputers is described which can perform a full 16 bit signed multiply with 32 bit product in ∼ lμs. Loading of operand and unloading of product is under direct software control, and the entire process is accomplished in 6 Nova assembly level language instructions. Minor changes in control logic and/or bus structure would allow the unit to be used with any of the commonly available 16 bit mini or microcomputer systems.
